Employment History:  
Before joining Hinshaw & Culbertson in January 2003, Mr. Schmadeke was general counsel to the Illinois state comptroller. He advised the comptroller and senior staff on constitutional and legal matters, fiscal affairs, and oversight of cemeteries and funeral homes.

His litigation against cemeteries and funeral homes involving regulated trust funds included a case in which a $1.5 million judgment was entered for the comptroller.

He also worked 11 years for the Illinois attorney general as chief of the general law bureau, which represents all state agencies, officers, and employees in federal and state court litigation. He supervised 21 attorneys and oversaw 5,000 cases involving civil rights, torts, equitable issues, mandamus, and declaratory judgment.

He served four years with the Jo Daviess County State's Attorney's Office, where he tried criminal cases, including felonies and civil cases in jury and bench trials.
