Practice Description:
Mr. Ferguson has been involved in commercial banking for more than 25 years, initially in the private practice of law, focusing on financial institutions, securities law, and general corporate transactions.
In 1986, he left private practice to become executive vice president and chief financial officer with Firstbank of Illinois Co., a large, publicly-traded multi-bank holding company headquartered in Springfield. In 1988, he was named chairman and chief executive officer of Firstbank, which soon became the largest and most profitable banking organization in downstate Illinois. Critical to the company's success were its numerous acquisitions of banks and other financial services companies in central and southern Illinois and in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Following Firstbank's merger with Mercantile Bancorporation of St. Louis, Mr. Ferguson became president and chief executive officer of Mercantile Bank of Illinois and its successor, Firstar Bank of Illinois. He returned to private practice with Sorling, Northrup, Hanna, Cullen & Cochran, Ltd., following his retirement from Firstar in 2001. His practice in Springfield has focused on commercial banking transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, and he has advised banks and bank holding companies in Illinois and elsewhere in the Midwest.
