Practice Description:
Mr. Katz is engaged primarily in client counseling, licensing and litigation concerning all areas of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks and copyrights. He has extensive experience in the electronics field and has achieved significant recognition for his work in the protection of computer programs and video games under the copyright laws. Mr. Katz entered the patent field as an examiner at the U.S. Patent Office in 1962, and has practiced patent law continuously for more than 35 years. He is the 1999 president of the Association of Patent Law Firms and is on the advisory boards of The Licensing Journal, The IP Litigator and Mealey's Litigation Reports on Intellectual Property. He is also on the IP Advisory Board to the George Washington University Law School. In 1982, Mr. Katz received the Patent Resources Group Award of Distinction for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Intellectual Property Law. He is the author of several publications and is a frequent lecturer for professional organizations throughout the world. He is the coauthor of Electronics and Computer Patent and Copyright Practice, 2d ed., 1990; Chip, Mask and Program Protection, 1985, and other publications dealing with effective remedies against counterfeits and knockoffs. Some seminar topics include "Electronics and Computer Patent and Copyright Protection," for the Patent Resources Group, and "Protection of Video Games Under the Copyright Laws" at the Second International Conference of the Japanese Amusement Machine Manufacturers Association, Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Katz is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Notable Cases and Results:
Technomed Medical Systems v. Dornier, 98-C-68 and 98-C-345 (E.D. Wis. January 14, 1999). Preliminary injunction entered against defendant. Case settled with a permanent injunction against defendant.
Wanlass. v. General Electric, No. 95 cv 0320-S (D. Utah, filed 1995), aff'd 143 F.3d 1334 (Fed. Cir. 1998). The court granted our motion for summary judgment and entered judgment in favor of defendant, GE. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed.
